10 Life Lessons We Can Learn From Our Cats

Life lessons from our cats

We think of our cat companions as our best friends, as our family. And like any friend or family member, our feline friends can teach us many life lessons. From how to be present to how to truly appreciate a good night’s rest, these are the ten lessons we can learn from our cats.

Be Present

If the new normal has taught us anything, it’s that we don’t know anything about tomorrow and yesterday is already gone. So, like our cat companions, we need to learn to be present in the moment. Cats have the ability to be in the present space and time. When they are around us, they are with us; they don’t have a million and one things running through their head. When your kitty snuggles on your lap or brings you a toy to play with, they are indicating all they want in the present moment. They are showing us how to be present.

Let Sleeping Cats Lie

Think of your cat — most of what they do is sleep! And there’s nothing more fascinating (or cute!) then watching our furry friends take a nap. When cats are asleep, they are completely relaxed, no matter the often awkward position. So, take a page from their book, and sleep as you’ve never slept before! Hit the snooze button, take that afternoon nap, or curl up in bed earlier than normal. Just like our feline friends, you deserve to snooze!

Play Like You Mean It

Have you ever noticed how cats are so attentive and involved in play? When they zoom, they zoom. Whether it’s chasing, playing fetch, scratching their favorite post, or running laps around the house, cats play like they mean it. Are you able to give your feline friend the same full attention when you play with them?

Live Fully

Simply put — life is too short to be bored! And our feline friends know this well. So live fully, make the most of every moment, and don’t forget to have some fun! If you feel like you are struggling with this, take a look at your cat! Cats are always able to find joy in even the smallest places. Just look at the infinite number of funny cat videos available online!

Be Curious, Always

Cats are the masters of curiosity! They remind us that life is full of mysteries waiting to be explored. From investigating the funny smell of your socks to inspecting every box that enters the house, their inquisitive nature teaches us to never stop exploring and learning.

Be Spontaneously You!

Cats are the living embodiment of spontaneity! One moment they're lounging around, and the next, they're dashing around the room in a playful frenzy. Their childlike attitude and their ability to let go of inhibitions remind us to embrace our inner goofiness and enjoy life's spontaneous joys!

Smile

Be sure to not take yourself too seriously! Cats don’t criticize us, let alone themselves. Both you and your cat are purrfect just the way you are.

Follow Your Gut

Cats always do what they want. You simply cannot force them to do anything that they don’t want to do. And we should learn from that! Do whatever feels right for you. Say no. Take time for yourself. Put your feelings and your instincts first.

Cuddle Your Worries Away

Life is stressful, and a good cuddle (and purr) is the best medicine. Whether it’s snuggling up to your feline friend after a long day or waking up to their soft purrs in the morning, cat cuddles have a magical healing power that can purr all of our worries away!

Love Unconditionally

The tenth and most important life lesson that our cat is to love unconditionally. After all, who loves you more purely than your feline friend?

We are blessed to be able to share our lives with cats, and we should take the time to learn what they are trying to teach us. After all, cats live relaxed, happy lives — something we should all strive for!
